Deep in the heart of California’s famed wine region is The Madrona, Sonoma county’s newest boutique hotel and dining destination located in Healdsburg, California. Opening in April 2022, this historic 24-room property sits on 8 acres of pristine land and was built in 1881 as a private family residence.

The hotel’s original owners, the Paxton family, had a deep love of travel and a flair for design, and put a strong emphasis on creating a home that showcased their passion for art and culture. Renown designer Jay Jeffers, the Madrona’s co-owner, has taken inspiration from the estate’s rich history to create a stunning space filled with visual delicacies that celebrates the property’s 19th century roots while also highlighting modern details and comforts. The Madrona and its sprawling grounds are located in Healdsburg, directly next to Napa Valley, which is renown for being one of the world’s top wine regions, boasting more than 400 wineries and some truly exceptional award-winning restaurants. Visitors will instantly be enamored with Healdsburg’s quaint small-town charm, along with its world-class wineries and impressive culinary scene.

Perched at the top of a hill overlooking lush green gardens and impeccable grounds with the rolling vineyards as a backdrop, The Madrona truly basks in its glorious scenic surroundings. Even though it sits only a mile from the center of town, the estate manages to feel like a tranquil world unto itself. Beyond the perfectly-manicured gardens and fragrant citrus groves, there is also a heated outdoor pool where guests can lounge on daybeds and nearby fire pits create the ideal atmosphere for relaxing year-round. The estate also offers a state-of-the-art gym and fitness studio complete with Peloton Bikes, a treadmill, and an outdoor area for yoga and meditation.

The Madrona features a collection of 24 quaint studios, classic rooms, and über-luxurious private bungalows as accommodation. Rooms at the Mansion are situated above the signature restaurant and main lounge areas in what was once the Paxton family’s living quarters.

Due to the historic nature of the building, no two rooms are quite alike. Some feature soaring ceilings and scenic bay windows, while others have original fireplaces and large balconies that look out over the rolling hills of Dry Creek Valley. There are also a number of studio suites in the estate’s original Carriage House that provide more privacy and seclusion with their own exclusive entrance to the lobby. The elegant standalone bungalows, housed in buildings originally dating back to 1861, are scattered around the edges of The Madrona’s 8 acres, allowing for a more residential feel and providing a truly peaceful and secluded escape amongst the verdant trees and natural surroundings.

Throughout the property, Jay Jeffers’ eclectic interior and exterior designs reflect a modern-day interpretation of the famed “Grand Dame” estates of the late 19th century. Jeffers chooses to preserve and celebrate the history of The Madrona while still incorporating contemporary elements, and this charming blend of old and new is perfectly reflected in his choice of art work. An impressive collection of contemporary art pieces—many of which were created exclusively for the hotel—provides a bold contrast to the intricately carved mahogany furnishings, quirky animal motifs, and assemblage of over 200 antiques from around the world, some that once belonged to the estate’s original owners.

Beyond the stunning decor, sprawling grounds and sumptuous rooms, The Madrona also offers an exceptional signature restaurant helmed by Michelin-starred chef Jesse Mallgren. The menu showcases the eclectic culture and cuisine that defines Northern California. The world-renown Sonoma county food scene is ready to herald in The Madrona as the new dining destination of the wine region. Signature dishes with an international flare and seasonal ingredients—all sourced directly from the property’s on-site garden—include a Chicken Paillard with a Southeast Asian twist, Steak Tartare with goma dare, quail egg and fresh wasabi, and Local Anchovies cured with Madrona lemons.

Guests can choose to enjoy their meals in multiple dining spaces, from the elegant Dining Room to the open-air Palm Terrace overlooking the gardens. There is also the option to dine more casually in one of the Madrona’s intimate lounge spaces, including the stunning wrap-around Front Porch, the quaint and cozy Front Parlor, and Hanna’s Bar, a chic cocktail lounge that serves an eclectic menu of cocktails, spirits, and of course, a robust wine list that showcases the work of winemakers in both Sonoma and around the world.
