The island of Madeira has always been mostly off the radar for American travelers, but that is slowly starting to change. The historic Reid’s Palace, where Winston Churchill wrote some of his memoirs, has been lovingly updated by Belmond without losing its sense of timeless indulgence. Set in verdant gardens overlooking the Atlantic ocean, it’s a fabulous spot for families to base themselves over spring break.

As of January 2023, there is one (1) non-stop flight per week flying between New York (JFK) and Madeira (FNC), but the island is also easily reachable from Lisbon, Porto, Madrid, Paris, and most other European capitals. Inevitably the island will soar in popularity over the coming years, so now is the perfect time to discover its untouched allure and make lifetime memories with your family!

The main town of Madeira is the picturesque and quaint Funchal, and the rest of the island is dominated by mountainous and spectacular rural landscape, including the second highest sea cliff in the world. Activities on the island include mountain biking- which Nigel Hack, the founder of Madrid & Beyond, says to this day that the bike tour he took with his family in Madeira is the best one he’s ever had in his life- hiking, sidecar tours on vintage motorbikes, dolphin and whale watching excursions, and sunrise tours in a 4×4’.

Madeira also boasts some excellent wines– Shakespeare himself praises them in one of his plays – and especially delicious gastronomy. Madrid & Beyond is able to provide insider access to the very best local wine makers on the island, as well as a bespoke private dinner prepared by an up and coming local chef in his own family home.
