Introducing The Mercer in New York City

October 1, 2023 by Perrie Hartz

Situated in the heart of Soho, where cobblestone streets meet high fashion and artistic expression, The Mercer is a perennially stylish haunt that attracts both well-heeled visitors and Manhattan locals alike. Amidst the buzz and excitement of downtown New York City, The Mercer offers an unparalleled blend of luxury, sophistication, and comfort.

This iconic hotel is housed in a lovely red-brick Romanesque revival landmark building, and boasts exposed brick walls and enclaves, neutral hues, and hardwood floors that pair well visually with the neighborhood’s famous cast-iron and glass sidewalks. A true architectural gem that merges the charm of a historic building with the elegance of modern design, The Mercer, like Soho itself, gives off an air of effortless cool, and the appeal of this property is that it feels less like a hotel and more like the personal townhouse of an exceedingly stylish New Yorker.

Throughout six floors, The Mercer boasts 73 rooms and suites. Accommodations range in both size and design from rooms to studios, suites, and penthouses, with options for interconnecting rooms and multi-room blocks. All feature oversized windows with abundant natural light and large marble bathrooms, and several also boast unique features like exposed brick walls, separate sitting areas, cozy fireplaces, or Juliette balconies. Designed by celebrated French interior designer and architect Christian Liaigre, the rooms have a romantic, minimalist aesthetic and an earthy palette, highlighted by pieces of contemporary art and fresh flowers that provide a warm, personalized touch. In-room amenities include a well-stocked minibar, a Nespresso coffee machine, and La Bottega toiletries, along with a flat-screen TV and high-speed Wi-Fi.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a room here that isn’t visually impressive and thoroughly comfortable, though the Loft Suite is exceptionally stunning: a large, penthouse-style room with dramatically arched windows, wood-burning fireplace, and oversized furnishings. It also boasts a spacious marble bathroom with a walk-in shower and oversized bathtub. For guests who want to be fully immersed in the energy of the Big Apple, the Loft Studio has a Juliette-style balcony that overlooks the bustling streets of Soho below.

The Mercer Hotel’s eternally-hip restaurant recently reopened as Sartiano’s, a dimly-lit hot spot evoking a moody Tuscan wine cellar, with exposed brick walls, marble counters, and Hollywood banquettes. The modern Italian menu is helmed by James Beard Award-winning chef Alfred Portale, and includes everything from springy housemate focaccia to lobster bucatini, caviar-topped spaghetti, black truffle lasagne, and Dover sole piccata. For a more relaxed setting, Sartiano’s also serves upstairs in the bright and buzzy lobby café, where you can settle in with a cappuccino for some truly stellar people watching.

After a busy day of exploring the city, guests can head to The Lobby for cocktails, inviting sofas and exposed brick walls lined with books. The Mercer Hotel also offers a plethora of amenities designed to enhance the guest experience, including a state-of-the-art fitness center and a partnership with Chelsea Piers, New York City’s largest athletic complex that offers guests access to the pool, driving ranges, and much more. The property’s serene courtyard garden is a peaceful oasis amidst the urban hustle and bustle—a beautiful feature which many of their spacious rooms overlook. Visiting New York City can be overwhelming, which is why The Mercer’s talented concierge team is always on hand to offer sightseeing and shopping recommendations, snag hard-to-get dining reservations, and create itineraries personally tailored to each guest.

A true testament to New York City’s ever-enduring allure, The Mercer Hotel is a stylish blend of historic charm, contemporary luxury, award-winning dining, and thoughtful details, creating an atmosphere that is both warmly welcoming and undeniably cosmopolitan.
