Overview
Zannier Sonop appears almost as a mirage: ten canvas tents raised on a jumble of granite boulders at the southern edge of the Namib, the world’s oldest desert. Designed in the spirit of a luxurious 1920s expedition camp, the lodge brings a richly furnished world of four-poster beds, colorful carpets, antiques, and polished brass into an immense, sparsely inhabited landscape. From the terraces and roll-up canvas walls, the desert stretches toward distant mountains, changing color as the light moves across it.The period detail shapes much of the experience. Telescopes stand ready inside the tents, vintage bathtubs face outward through partially walled bathrooms, and the Cocktail & Cigar Lounge gathers guests around a billiard table after dark. Beneath the explorer-era furnishings, the lodge’s energy supply relies entirely on solar panels. Sonop also holds Green Globe certification, reflecting its approach to operating within the surrounding desert environment.
By day, nearly 14,000 private acres invite exploration by vehicle, bicycle, horseback, and on foot. Morning and sunset nature drives travel in bespoke open Land Cruisers, with guides introducing the plants and wildlife that survive in this demanding landscape. Oryx, kudu, jackal, brown hyena, and leopard are among the species found in the reserve, while smaller discoveries reveal themselves along the way: insects moving through the sand, birds gathering around immense communal nests, and caves among the boulders containing traces of earlier San inhabitants.
Walking trails follow ancient riverbeds, electric fat-bikes take to marked routes, and horses from the lodge’s own stables carry riders toward the dune ridges. Private lessons are available, and outings can include a stop for coffee above the desert. For a memorable start to the morning, breakfast can be arranged atop the Sonop dune, with linen and silver laid beneath an acacia tree. Hot air balloon excursions offer another perspective, followed by breakfast after landing, while longer adventures reach Sossusvlei or take to the air for scenic helicopter flights.
Dinner brings everyone back to the camp’s theatrical sense of occasion. Silverware, candelabras, and attentive service accompany a nightly gala meal around a communal table, where guests exchange stories from the day. Private dinners can also be arranged on the dunes, with lantern light marking out a small, intimate setting against the open desert. Every second evening, the open-air cinema screens classic films beside the pool, with homemade popcorn and the night sky overhead.
Between adventures, the spa offers treatments built around a philosophy of respecting Namibia's own traditions, from the signature Desert Ritual to a family of Touch of Namibia massages using indigenous ingredients like marula and mopane oil. The heated infinity pool looks out over the surrounding plains, with cocktails and light bites available from the Pool Bar during the day. A fitness center and relaxation area complete the offering.
Accommodations
Each of Zannier Sonop's ten tents opens with what the lodge calls its reception room, a small sitting space of armchairs and precious wood that sets the tone before you have even reached the bed. From there, canvas walls roll back to let the plains in, and a telescope stands ready at the desk for whichever stars pull your attention after dinner. The eight one-bedroom tents, just over 450 square feet, hold a king-size four-poster bed that converts to a Hollywood twin, so the room can flex for however your travelers are pairing up. The two two-bedroom tents nearly double that footprint at roughly 800 square feet, folding a second bedroom and two separate en-suite bathrooms around a shared living area, suited to two couples or a larger group traveling together. Each tent opens onto its own private terrace, a quiet perch above the boulders where the desert does most of the decorating. Inside, the antiques carry real weight: explorer-style pieces in fine materials, paired with colorful carpets and the same precious wood that runs through the reception room. The bathroom carries that same instinct, a double-sink vanity and a vintage bathtub paired with a rain shower, open behind those partial walls, so that even bathing happens in the company of the horizon.
Zannier Sonop welcomes children aged six and above.
