Leading a Landmark: New General Manager Luis Cobo Charts The Majestic Barcelona’s Next Era
February 4, 2026 by Andy Martell

How do you modernize a legend without losing its soul? It is the delicate balancing act facing every historic property, but perhaps none more so than the Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona. Standing on the Paseo de Gracia for over a century, the hotel is not just a place to stay; it is a landmark of the city itself.
We recently sat down with new General Manager Luis Cobo to discuss his vision for the hotel’s next chapter, the specific details of the upcoming renovations, and his philosophy on ensuring the Majestic remains timeless in a changing world.
What drew you to the Majestic Hotel & Spa Barcelona specifically, and what are you most looking forward to in this new role?
What drew me to the Majestic is its unique position in Barcelona. It is not only a luxury hotel, but a place with real history, character, and emotional value for the city. Taking on this role means continuing a legacy while bringing a fresh perspective. What I look forward to most is working closely with the team and guests to guide the hotel confidently into its next chapter, always with respect for what makes the Majestic so special.

You’re leading a property that is not just a hotel, but a landmark of the city. As you guide the Majestic through this next phase of its storied history, how do you balance the need for modern renovation with the responsibility of preserving the hotel’s timeless appeal?
The balance comes from understanding that renovation should enhance, not replace, the essence of the Majestic. Its timeless appeal is rooted in its architecture, service philosophy, and atmosphere. Modern updates are carefully designed to improve comfort, functionality, and sustainability, while remaining faithful to the hotel’s identity. Every decision is made with long-term value and respect for the Majestic’s heritage in mind.

Can you give us a high-level overview of the upcoming renovations your team has planned and what the primary goal is behind this transformation?
At a high level, the renovations focus on refreshing selected guest rooms, suites, and key shared spaces. The primary goal is to elevate the guest experience and ensure the Majestic continues to meet the expectations of today’s international luxury traveler, while preserving the elegance and character that have defined the hotel for generations.

For our clients who know and love the Majestic, which areas of the hotel will see the most significant changes?
Guests who know the Majestic well will notice the most significant updates in certain rooms and suites, as well as thoughtful improvements in some public areas like gastronomy experiences. These changes are designed to enhance comfort and flow, while keeping the overall look and feeling familiar and unmistakably Majestic.

Can you share any details about the design inspiration for the refreshed spaces?
The design is inspired by the classic elegance of Barcelona, with a strong focus on balance, light, and timeless proportions. As seen in the refreshed spaces, there is a clear dialogue between traditional details and contemporary comfort. Soft textures, refined fabrics, and a calm palette of blues, neutrals, and warm tones create a sense of serenity, while architectural elements and tailored furnishings reflect the hotel’s heritage. The result is a space that feels residential, elegant, and welcoming, while remaining unmistakably Majestic.
For those planning to visit in the near future, how is the team managing the renovation timeline and its impact on current guests?
Renovations are carefully planned and carried out in phases to minimize any impact on the guest experience. Guest comfort remains the top priority, and the team is fully focused on maintaining high service standards, clear communication, and a calm atmosphere throughout the hotel during this period.

As someone bringing a fresh pair of eyes to this historic property, what do you see as the most important elements of the Majestic experience to maintain into this new era?
The most important elements to preserve are the people, the service culture, and the strong sense of place. Personalized service, discretion, and an authentic connection to Barcelona are at the heart of the Majestic experience. These values define the hotel and must remain central as it continues to evolve.
